|
was conducted to investigate the
extent to which readers use verb information to resolve temporarily ambiguous
NPs, specifically how readers used verb information during the processing of
sentences containing ambiguous NPs continued as NP or S complements as well
as sentences containing unambiguous S complements (complements containing the
complementizerthat)
|
Research Object
|
This study examined 90 research
article abstracts in three applied linguistics journals (i.e., TESOL
Quarterly, Applied Linguistics, and Language Learning) from two dimensions:
the move structure features and the verb tense of each move.
|
investigatethe role of verb
information in re- solving structural ambiguity during sentence comprehension
|
Research Methodology
|
First, all the research articles with
abstracts (excluding reviews, brief reports and summaries, forum articles and
articles in the supplementary issues) in the three journals from the year
2005 to 2007 were compiled, resulting in 70 articles in TQ, 64 in AL, and 55 in
LL. Second, with the application of stratified sampling (Brown, 1988), 30
articles were randomly selected from the three journals, with 10 articles
from each year in each journal. However, given the fact that the rhetorical
structure of empirical research articles may be different from that of
theoretical ones, only the data-based, empirical research articles were
included in the corpus.
|
Comparing 48 sentences experiments in
research methods and produce 10% of Verb phrase that has limited.
|
Result
|
The results showed that nearly
half of the students’ abstracts lacked
the moves of Background (Introduction in Hyland 2000), Purpose, and Method,
while most of the scholars’ abstracts contained five moves, with the exception
of Method. Cross and Oppenheim (2006) analyzed 12 abstracts in the field of
protozoology.
|
The results showed that contrary to
predictions made by verb guidance theories (e.g., constraint satisfaction;
MacDonald, Pearlmutter, & Seidenberg, 1994a, 1994b; Trueswell &
Tanenhaus, 1994), for both NP- and S-biased verb conditions, sentences
containing temporarily ambiguous noun phrase com- plements were read most
quickly, and sentences containing temporarily ambiguous S complements were
read more slowly than those containing unambiguous S complements.
|
Difference
|
To the difference in the two journals
are:
a)
Journal 1 aims
to also learn the use of verbs Verb in the manufacture of an abstract phrase
and a journal 2 to find out information about the use of verbs Verb to solve
NP.
b)
Journal 1
using 90 studies to be made the object of research, and a journal second only
Verb examines the role of the information.
|
|
Equality
|
The second equation journal is equally
used to examine the use of verbs Verb in daily activities either in general
or research.
|
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
Based on the above journal, the use of verbs Verb
still is in need in settlement of scientific work. A verb is much that
needs to be done pempraktekan every day in order to understand and memorize
vocabulary in order to simplify the pronunciation. With the Verb structure
above may facilitate the understanding of the pronunciation and writing of
verbs that describe the activities of both present, future or past.
